Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland & Labrador (PEG-NL) is an organization that regulates the practice of engineering and geoscience in the public interest, as outlined in the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, 2008 of Newfoundland and Labrador. These specific appointments are for public interest representatives and are not available to PEG-NL members.


PEG-NL is governed by a board of directors which consists of 9 professional members who are elected from and by members of the association in accordance with PEG-NL’s by-laws. The Minister of Service NL is responsible for appointing three individuals to the PEG-NL board of directors in order to represent the public interest. As the available appointments are for public interest representatives, prospective candidates cannot also be members of PEG-NL.

Competency Profile:

Individuals interested an appointment to the PEG-NL board should have a diverse background and bring a wide range of perspectives and knowledge. Collectively public interest appointees could possess the following core competencies:

  • Strategic Management and Organizational Change;
  • Legal Expertise;
  • Public Relations;
  • Public Sector Administration;
  • Governance;
  • Human Resources;
  • Experience with Self-Regulating Organizations;
  • Previous Board Experience;
  • Analytical Skills;
  • Executive Experience;
  • Financial Expertise/Literacy; and,
  • Decision Making Skills.


  • High ethical standards and integrity;
  • Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public;
  • Flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ opinions;
  • Capable of a wide perspective on issues;
  • Ability to listen and work as a team member;
  • No direct or indirect conflict of interest;
  • Strong reasoning skills; and,
  • The members of the board appointed as public interest members shall not be members of PEG-NL.

Time Commitments:

Members of the Board should be available to meet six times per year for a full day each time. There is also a full day Annual General Meeting following the June Board meeting. There may be other meetings depending on committee work at any given time.


A person appointed by the Minister holds office for a term of 3 years and is eligible to be re-appointed. Where a person appointed by the minister holds office for a period of 9 consecutive years the person is not eligible for appointment as a member of the board until the expiration of 12 months from the end of the year in which he or she was last a member. Where the term of an appointed member expires, he or she continues to be a member until re-appointed or replaced but time served by that member under this subsection shall not be counted for the purpose of the 9 consecutive year limitation. In addition, members of board appointed under this section cannot be members of PEG-NL as these specific appointments are for public interest representatives.

Vacancy Profile:

The Board of Directors is seeking to fill two positions to represent the public interest. Expressions of interest are being sought from individuals who possess the background, experience and skill-set identified and who can bring unique perspectives to the table. Consideration will also be given to a variety of demographic factors to ensure the board is representative of the population they serve.
