Selection Board for the URock Youth Volunteer Award

The URock Volunteer Awards is a recognition program that acknowledges the contributions of outstanding young volunteers and youth organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador. The role of the URock Selection Board is to consider nominations received and identify the names of up to eight individuals/organizations who in the opinion of the Selection Board, are worthy of receiving the award.

URock Selection Board members are appointed for a three-year term.


The Selection Board must comprise a maximum of eight members including:

  1. the Clerk of Executive Council
  2. three members who are members of the Order of Canada, Order of Newfoundland and Labrador or recipients of the URock Volunteer Award
  3. up to four others appointed by Cabinet


There are three criteria associated with the appointments to the Selection Board:

  1. at least three members must be male;
  2. at least three members must be female; and
  3. at least three members must be 30 years of age or under at the time of appointment.

Competency Profile:

Those who make up the URock Selection Board should collectively possess the following core competencies:

  • Thoroughness

  • Teamwork
  • Excellent Written and Oral Communication


Personal and professional qualifications of Selection Board members should include:

  • high ethical standards and integrity
  • appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
  • flexible, responsive and willing to consider others' opinions
  • capable of a wide perspective on issues
  • ability to listen and work as a team member
  • no direct or indirect conflict of interest
  • strong reasoning skills
  • knowledge of the community sector
  • understanding of youth-related community involvement
  • ability to make decisions
  • experience with evaluation
  • geographic representation

Time Commitments:

Members of the URock Youth Volunteer Award Selection Board should be available to meet by teleconference to identify URock Youth Volunteer Award recipients. Board members will also be expected to spend additional time to review materials in preparation for the selection of URock Youth Volunteer Award recipients.


 Board members serve for a three-year term. The URock Awards Show is a biennial event, last held in 2015 and next scheduled for 2017 and 2019. Board members will therefore not have board responsibilities in 2018.

Vacancy Profile:

The Communications and Public Engagement Branch of Executive Council, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, is seeking to fill up to seven (7) positions to represent the public interest on the Selection Board for the URock Youth Volunteer Award. The terms of all board members have expired, with the exception of the Clerk of Executive Council who serves in perpetuity.

Expressions of interest are being sought from individuals who possess the core competencies and qualifications identified in the above board profile. As one (1) member must be a member of the Order of Canada or the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, or be a past recipient of either the URock Youth Volunteer Award or Youth Volunteer Service Medal, individuals who have these distinctions are encouraged to apply.

Consideration will also be given to geographic representation, gender and age as at least three members must be female, at least three male and at least three 30 years of age or younger at the time of appointment.
