Remuneration

Any remuneration or allowance is determined and paid by the College

Purpose:

This College will ensure that persons working in this specific health profession have the appropriate academic credentials and competencies for entry to practice.

Structure:

The composition of the College shall reflect the cultural, ethnic, and regional diversity of the province.

The Board will consist of:

  • six members elected from and by licensed practical nurses in accordance with the by-laws
  • three persons appointed by the Minister to represent the public interest
  • one person appointed by the Centre for Nursing Studies or a successor organization through which the program of studies leading to qualification as practical nurse is taught
  • the registrar of the college appointed by the other members of the board

Competency Profile:

Diversity in the backgrounds, skills and experience of appointed members can enhance the effectiveness of a Board by bringing a wider range of perspectives and knowledge. Examples may include:          

  • Knowledge of the Licensed Practical Nurses Act
  • Health professions regulation
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior
  • Ability to read, analyze, and evaluate information
  • Ability to think strategically and engage in future-oriented discussion and planning
  • Specialist competency skills
  • Technological competency
  • Backgrounds: law enforcement, health care, governance, human resources, human relations, legal expertise, financial expertise

Leadership and vision: the ability to see the big picture and the courage to set direction to achieve the College’s mission

Qualifications:

The following attributes are important considerations in selecting members:

  • Expressed interest in health care
  • Able to chair Committee and Board meetings
  • High ethical standards and integrity
  • Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
  • Flexible, responsive, and willing to consider others’ opinions
  • Capable of a wide perspective on issues
  • Ability to listen and work as a team member
  • No direct or indirect conflict of interest
  • Strong reasoning and conflict resolution skills
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral)
  • Policy development experience
  • Leadership that fosters a diverse and respectful environment

Time Commitments:

Board meetings are held approximately three times per year, which would total approximately thirty hours annually of preparation and meeting time.  Members are expected to attend the Annual General Meeting.

Term:

A person appointed by the Minister holds office for a term of three years and is eligible to be re-appointed. Where a person appointed by the Minister holds office for a period of nine consecutive years the person is not eligible for appointment as a member of the Board until the expiration of twelve months from the end of the year in which they were last a member of the Board.

Where the term of office of a person appointed by the Minister expires, he or she continues to be a member of the Board until re-appointed or replaced.
