Remuneration

Any remuneration or allowance is determined and paid by the Board

Purpose:

The Board will ensure the promotion of high standards of practice and continuing competency and quality improvement through continuing education; the administration of a registration program; and ensuring that the public interest is protected by the administration of a quality assurance program and a discipline process.

Structure:

The composition of the Board shall reflect the cultural, ethnic, and regional diversity of the province.

The Board consists of:

• five directors elected from and by registered psychologists in accordance with the by-laws
• two directors appointed by the minister who are not registered psychologists who are suitable to represent the public interest
• the registrar of the Board appointed by the Board who shall not have the right to vote
• the Board will elect from among the directors a chairperson

Competency Profile:

Diversity in the backgrounds, skills, knowledge, and experience of appointed Board members can enhance the effectiveness of a Board by bringing a wider range of perspectives and knowledge. Examples may include:

• Knowledge of the Psychologists Act, 2005
• Ability to think strategically and engage in future-oriented discussion and planning
• Financial expertise/literacy/technological competence
• Ability to serve the public in a manner that protects and serves the public interest
• Effective communication skills, including the ability to listen actively, speak persuasively and write clearly and concisely
• Familiarity with the principals of good governance, including accountability, transparency and ethical conduct
• Leadership skills that foster a diverse and respectful environment
• Backgrounds: health care, public relations, governance, human resources, legal expertise
• Technological competency

Qualifications:

The following attributes are important considerations in selecting members:

• Expressed interest in health care
• General understanding of/experience in professional self-regulation
• Previous board experience
• High ethical standards and integrity
• Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
• Flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ opinions
• Capable of a broad perspective on issues
• Ability to listen and work as a team member
• No direct or indirect conflict of interest
• Strategic planning experience
• Effective communication skills (written and oral)
• Policy development experience
• Leadership/management skills

Time Commitments:

Board meetings are usually held monthly and last between two and three hours. Board members may be expected to serve on a committee of the board but many of these (with the exception of the Complaints Authorization Committee) are ad hoc committees struck to serve a specific, time limited function. In addition, board members are expected to attend the Board’s Annual General Meeting, educational sessions and strategic planning sessions.

Term:

A member of the Board shall be elected or appointed for a term of 3 years and is eligible for re-election or re-appointment, but a member shall not serve on the Board for a continuous period exceeding nine years. Where the term of office of a member of the Board expires and a successor has not been elected or appointed, that member may continue to hold office until a successor is elected or appointed.

Vacancy Profile:

The Newfoundland and Labrador Psychology Board is seeking to fill two positions to represent the public interest. Expressions of interest are being sought from individuals who possess the background, experience and skill set identified in the board profile above and who can bring unique perspectives to the table. Consideration will also be given to a variety of demographic factors to ensure the Board is representative of the population they serve.
