Disciplinary Panel of the Dispensing Opticians Board

Subsection 13(4) of the Dispensing Opticians Act, 2005


No Remuneration


To hear complaints regarding licensed practitioners.


The board shall appoint at least five dispensing opticians who are not members of the board, one of whom shall be appointed to serve as chairperson, and the minister shall appoint at least two persons, who are not dispensing opticians, to represent the public interest, who shall together constitute a disciplinary panel.

  • General understanding of self-regulation
  • Interest in health care
  • Previous board/disciplinary panel experience
  • High ethical standards and integrity
  • Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
  • Flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ opinions
  • Capable of a wide perspective on issues
  • Ability to listen and work as a team member
  • No direct or indirect conflict of interest
  • Strong reasoning and conflict resolution skills
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral)
  • Policy development experience
  • Leadership/management skills

Time Commitments:

Panel members are only required if there is a disciplinary matter or upon the call of the Chair.


Of the members first appointed to the disciplinary panel, one half shall be appointed for a term of two years and the remainder for a term of 3 years and all subsequent appointments of members to the disciplinary panel shall be for a term of 3 years. Notwithstanding the expiry of his or her term, a member of the disciplinary panel may continue to be a member until he or she is reappointed or replaced.
