Remuneration

Any remuneration or allowance is determined and paid by the Board

Purpose:

This Board will ensure that persons working in this health profession have the appropriate academic credentials and competencies for entry to practice.

Structure:

The composition of the Board shall reflect the cultural, ethnic, and regional diversity of the province.

The Board shall consist of:

• five dentists registered and licensed under the Act, nominated and elected in accordance with the by-laws
• one person appointed by the Minister to represent select dental auxiliary groups
• two other persons appointed by the Minister to represent the general public

Competency Profile:

Diversity in the backgrounds, skills, knowledge, and experience of appointed Board members can enhance the effectiveness of a Board by bringing a wider range of perspectives and knowledge. Examples may include:

• Knowledge of the Dental Act, 2008
• Ability to think strategically and engage in future-oriented discussion and planning
• Financial expertise/literacy/technological competence
• Ability to serve the public in a manner that protects and serves the public interest
• Familiarity with the principals of good governance, including accountability, transparency and ethical conduct
• Leadership skills that foster a diverse and respectful environment
• Backgrounds: health care, public relations, governance, human resources, legal expertise
• Technological competency

Qualifications:

The following attributes are important considerations in selecting members:

• Expressed interest in health care
• Previous board experience
• Knowledge of the dental profession
• High ethical standards and integrity
• Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
• Flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ opinions
• Capable of a broad perspective on issues
• Ability to listen and work as a team member
• No direct or indirect conflict of interest
• Strong reasoning and conflict resolution skills
• Effective communication skills (written and oral)
• Leadership qualities

Time Commitments:

Members of this Board should be available to meet three times per year, one of which will be the Annual General Meeting. Additional meetings may be called at the discretion of the Chair.

Term:

A member of the Board holds office for a term of 3 years or until his or her successor is elected or appointed. A member of the board is eligible for reappointment or re-election, but a member shall not serve on the Board for a continuous period exceeding 9 years.

Where a vacancy occurs in the membership of the Board as a result of the death, retirement, resignation, or incapacity to act of a member, the vacancy shall be filled.

(a) in the case of an elected member, by an election in accordance with the by-laws

(b) in the case of another member, by appointment

When a vacancy is filled, the person filling the vacancy shall serve only for the remainder of the term of office of the member being replaced, and that person is eligible for re-election or reappointment.

Vacancy Profile:

The Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Board is seeking to fill two positions to represent the public interest. Expressions of interest are being sought from individuals who possess the background, experience and skill set identified in the board profile above and who can bring unique perspectives to the table. Consideration will also be given to a variety of demographic factors to ensure the Board is representative of the population they serve.
