Purpose:

The Marble Mountain Resort is managed by the Marble Mountain Development Corporation (MMDC), located in Steady Brook, in the Humber Valley region of Western Newfoundland.  The mandate of MMDC is to serve as a catalyst for tourism development in Western Newfoundland. As stated in MMDC’s Articles of Incorporation, the mandate of the Board is as follows: 

  • To increase skier visits and the number of visitors
  • To develop and promote Marble Mountain as a year-round, full-service resort; and
  • To actively pursue operators, tenants and/or owners to occupy the lands in the area for the following purposes:
    • Ski facilities;
    • Summer activities and attractions;
    • Accommodations and services; and
    • Any other activity consistent with the development of a four-season establishment.

Structure:

 MMDC's bylaws provide for 11 Board members which are appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation.

Competency Profile:

Those who comprise the MMDC Board should collectively possess the following qualifications: 

  • Organizational management and governance;
  • Experience in human resource management and labour relations;
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the areas of marketing, promotions, corporate communications, social media, media relations, and crises management;
  • Tourism industry knowledge and experience;
  • Knowledge of winter tourism and the ski industry;
  • Experience in ski hill operations, resort operations, accommodations and/or food services;
  • Knowledge of land use planning and development;
  • Knowledge of business development and development;
  • Financial expertise; and
  • Legal expertise.

Qualifications:

MMDC Board members should possess knowledge of and experience in operation of a tourism resort, food service, accommodation or other relevant professional or volunteer experience. Personal attributes required of Board members should include: 

  • High ethical standards and integrity;
  • Appreciation of responsibilities to the public;
  • Flexible, responsive and willing to consider opinions of others;
  • Capable of a broad perspective on issues;
  • Ability to listen and work as a team member; and
  • No direct or indirect conflict of interest.

 

Time Commitments:

Members of the MMDC Board should be available to meet approximately 10 times per year. Occasionally, decisions of the Board will be requested via email or conference/video call. Board members may also be expected to spend additional time to review materials and prepare for meetings.

Term:

Board terms are for a period of three years and Board members continue to hold office until they are reappointed or a new member is appointed.
