On July 17, 2016, the coastline of Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve was inscribed as a World Heritage Site. The Mistaken Point World Heritage Site Management Plan outlined the creation of an Advisory Council to provide advice to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador regarding the World Heritage Site’s management and conservation.
The purpose of the Mistaken Point World Heritage Site Advisory Council (the Advisory Council) is:
The Advisory Council membership will fulfil its purpose through the following responsibilities and activities:
The Advisory Council will have eight public interest members that will be appointed through the Public Service Commission merit-based process. This includes representation from the following:
The Advisory Council will also consist of two ex-officio members representing the Provincial Government as follows:
The Advisory Council will also have seven members that will be nominated in writing by their organization to represent the following organizations:
The members appointed through the merit-based process should collectively possess the following core competencies:
Members of the Advisory Council should be available to meet at least once a year in the community of Portugal Cove South with additional meetings as required. Any subcommittees created through the Advisory Council may meet as required to address the subcommittee work and action items. The Advisory Council members may also be expected to spend additional time reviewing materials, submitting a written response, and reviewing reports on the condition of the property as required by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the World Heritage Committee.
Members are appointed for a term of three years. Chair and Vice-Chairperson are elected for a term of three years, after which they can be re-elected.
The Advisory Council may establish subcommittees consisting of members and/or resource people. A minimum of one Advisory Council member will be part of each subcommittee.
As this is a newly established Advisory Council, all positions being filled through this process are currently vacant. To fill these vacancies, expressions of interest are being sought from individuals who possess the background, experience and skill-set identified in this profile.
