Remuneration

Any remuneration or allowance is determined and paid by the College

Purpose:

This Council will ensure that persons working in this specific health profession have the appropriate academic credentials and competencies for entry into practice.

Structure:

The composition of the Council shall reflect the cultural, ethnic, and regional diversity of the province. 

The Council will consist of:

  • 10 persons elected from and by registered nurses in accordance with the by-laws; and
  • at least 4 persons appointed by the Minister to represent the public interest who are not registered nurses

Competency Profile:

Diversity in the backgrounds, skills, knowledge, and experience of appointed members can enhance the effectiveness of the Council by bringing a wider range of perspectives and knowledge. Examples of such backgrounds may include:

  • Knowledge of the Registered Nurses Act, 2008 and regulations
  • Demonstrate ethical, and professional behavior
  • Ability to read, analyze, and evaluate information
  • Ability to think strategically, and engage in future-oriented discussion to achieve the College’s mission
  • Technological competence

Qualifications:

The following attributes are important considerations in selecting members:

  • Previous board experience
  • High ethical standards and integrity
  • Understanding and appreciation of confidentiality
  • Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public
  • Understanding of regulatory principles including fiduciary responsibilities
  • Flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ perspectives
  • No direct or indirect conflict of interest
  • Strong reasoning and analytical skills
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral)

Time Commitments:

Council members must be available for at least six meetings per year. Three of these meetings are two day in-person meetings; the remaining meetings are teleconferences of three hours duration. In addition, members are required to attend the Board’s Annual General Meeting, education sessions and strategic planning sessions. 

One public representative is required to be a member of the Complaints Authorization Committee. Time commitments for this committee are determined by availability and may vary, but on average there are meetings ten times per year. This committee requires pre-reading, and at least three hours per meeting.

Term:

A member of the Council may be elected or appointed for a term of three years and is eligible for re-election or re-appointment, but such a member shall not serve on the council for a continuous period exceeding nine years. 

Where the term office of a member of the Council expires and a successor has not been elected or appointed, that member may continue to hold office until a successor is elected or appointed.
