The Newfoundland and Labrador College of Veterinarians objective is to serve and protect the public though the regulation of veterinary practice. The Governing Board oversees the registration, licensing, professional conduct of veterinarians and the facilities they practice from. It does so through the creation of by-laws, code of ethics, and clinic standards, as well as primary complaints investigations. The Governing Board is comprised of:
- 4 directors elected from and by the members of the NL College of Veterinarians (in accordance with section 10 of The Veterinary Medical Act)
- 1 government appointed director (under section 7, The Veterinary Medical Act) who is not a veterinarian
- the registrar elected (in accordance with section 10, The Veterinary Medical Act), who shall not vote on a matter before the board.
The practice of veterinary medicine encompasses an extensive range fields and species with broad reaching implications. Those who make up the Governing Board should collectively possess the following core competencies.

The entire membership of the NL College of Veterinarians are expected to participate in the Annual General Meeting (held in November). Members of the Governing Board should be available to meet at least monthly, with additional meetings required during active complaints investigations. Board members may also be expected to spend additional time to review materials and prepare for Board and Committee meetings.
The appointed director holds office a term of 2 years and is eligible to be re-appointed. Where a person appointed holds office for a period of 4 consecutive years the person is not eligible for appointment as a director until the expiration of 12 months from the end of the year in which he/she last held office as a director. Where the term of office of an appointed director expires, he/she continues to be a director until re-appointment or replaced.
