In February 2009, Government in partnership with Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) released Uncommon Potential – A Vision for Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism (Vision 2020). The tourism vision emphasizes that a unified approach is critical to the success of the province’s tourism industry. A Tourism Board was established to coordinate the implementation of Vision 2020. The secretariat for the Board is provided by HNL, the tourism industry association, with contributing funding from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation. The Board reports annually to the Minister on the status of its developments and recommendations with respect to the implementation of Vision 2020.
The Chair of the Tourism Board is appointed by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation. The remaining Board positions are appointed by their respective entities.

The Chair of the Tourism Board should be available to meet a minimum of five times per year. Board members may also be expected to spend additional time to review materials and prepare for Board and Committee meetings.
The Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board is appointed for a two year term.
