Purpose:

In February 2009, Government in partnership with Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) released Uncommon Potential – A Vision for Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism (Vision 2020). The tourism vision emphasizes that a unified approach is critical to the success of the province’s tourism industry. A Tourism Board was established to coordinate the implementation of Vision 2020. The secretariat for the Board is provided by HNL, the tourism industry association, with contributing funding from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation.  The Board reports annually to the Minister on the status of its developments and recommendations with respect to the implementation of Vision 2020.

The Chair of the Tourism Board is appointed by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation. The remaining Board positions are appointed by their respective entities.

Structure:

The Board includes the following members: 

  • The Chair of the Tourism Board, appointed by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation.
  • Four representatives of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • The Chairs of each of the five regional destination management organizations (DMO): Destination St. John’s, Legendary Coasts (Eastern DMO), Adventure Central Newfoundland (Central DMO), Go Western Newfoundland (Western DMO) and Destination Labrador.
  • The Assistant Deputy Minister of Tourism.
  • The Assistant Deputy Minister of Regional Development.
  • A senior official with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Competency Profile:

The Tourism Board Chair should possess

  • Extensive experience in the tourism industry;
  • Leadership in the tourism industry at the provincial and national level;
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a globalized economy;
  • Experience in private sector and public sector tourism practices;
  • Experience in working relationships with stakeholders;
  • Board governance experience;
  • Experience in Strategic tourism planning

Qualifications:

The Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board should possess the following qualifications:

  • Strong reading comprehension and critical thinking skills
  • High ethical standards and integrity
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality on all board issues
  • Ability to listen and work as a team member
  • No direct or indirect conflict of interest
  • Capable of a broad perspective on tourism issues

Time Commitments:

The Chair of the Tourism Board should be available to meet a minimum of five times per year. Board members may also be expected to spend additional time to review materials and prepare for Board and Committee meetings.

Term:

The Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board is appointed for a two year term.
